Morning all,

Had a little help building a railroad test last night (hopefully it's still up and hasn't been griefed). That aside, what do you guys think? Do you think our world is ready for a railroad track system?

How do u mean? From one town to another?

Absolutely. I like the idea of giving players (especially new members) a way to get around easily (of course, you'd need a minecart).

Expanded the test track a bit! Feel free to try out changes by using the warp railroadtest. (And don't forget to bring a minecart. :))

I'm all for this as I have a lot of rail tracks and a large supply of iron and some gold for powered rails. The only problem I have is the potential for grief on unprotected parts.

Not sure if I can help with wild mobs :) but I think I'd like to keep working on the railroad, at least for a time. I'd just need the ability to place railroad in some parts that are already claimed (or I'd need to be first to the wilderness, I guess).

Just added some more railroad! Warp railroadtest!

(Coming soon: possibly railroad stops and more reasons to try them out.)

Hi Wowman2002, thank you for the reply. I apologize for not having checked the reply sooner.

To be honest, it's still QUITE basic compared to some other potential railroads out there, but it will hopefully get the job done (which, I hope, is to connect various large chunks of the game world).

Maybe next time I'm on we can chat and you can show me your outpost. I'm not able to build wherever I want, though, due to factions, so I may need to really, really work on winging over to your land.

In the meantime - new stuff includes:

* One extra stop past the warp
* Extra paintings in most places, including the skyhub (my nickname for it :)

Enjoy! Wish I had a way of being able to work on the stuff without it being griefed, but grateful for all who have respected it so far. It's a gift for the whole community and I'd like to see it continue on.

Later!

And again!

More updates. Got an interesting plaza-thingy further down the line, and I fleshed out the "train-depot" up at the top of the railroad (not by the first redstone-y building, but the other end). Villagers. 'Nuff said.

Also - unfortunately - got griefed a bit. Had to repair some damage to railroad tracks when pieces were missing. Very glad for creative :) Wish I was able to protect land, but I don't think I have more power to claim in my faction.

Hope the track stays up! Enjoy. Have a great night.

Nothing new, just came back from being away for a while. Railroad got griefed a bit, repaired missing sections.

Considering re-building sections in bedrock, but that wouldn't take away from people that take sections of track. Dunno what to do.

Night!

I'm very interested in the concept of a railroad, just not so much on the dealing with griefing and rollbacks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kROzbVI5DI8 works, except it uses an item frame to select the destination, and those can't be protected as I understand it.

I'm way out in 1.8land, and I could see that as a very critical hub for new players to find new "wilds" land to build in, and if a *protected* way could be made for an 8-selection station and proof that rail tracks can be "reasonably" protected from griefing, I would be interested in having my location be a hub to go past to other places.

One question I have: Is The Nether a part of "make travel time go faster?"

Oh! I didn't know you could place tracks adjacent, I thought they'd want to connect the wrong way too often. Cool!

Beyond that...

1) If the issue is serious long distance travel, The Nether will likely need to be a part of that.

2) You need a viable select-able rail station to pick between hubs that serve local areas. If your plan has lots of people excited, lots of "stop" stations on a very long and winding track will get very old in a hurry.

3) Griefing may make this impractical depending upon how much gets fouled up between times when someone with interest and means can do repairs. Claiming long stretches between hubs is going to end up sucking in a hurry. http://docs.enginehub.org/manual/worldguard/latest/regions/quick-start/ describes a plug-in that would allow "rail crew" members, for example, to claim a 3d region just for rail. So it would be like a faction area, only you have a 3 wide by 3 high by some arbitrary length from within which to build your rail. People would be able to treat the area outside this "region" as wildlands, and mine as they expect, or handle other faction business. I do not know if this would conflict with other plugins, or if it even works as I think it does. It's just an idea.
4) Your rail plan would have to either be more interesting and/ or more effective as a way to get around than /warp someplace. /warps do away with all that work and fuss. I'm getting very happy with /f sethome, /sethome and /warps for quickly getting around and gathering supplies and materials. When I am at a point I am comfortable having people visit, they can teleport directly to me. If I want to just explore, I run where I please, and if it is near my home I can risk being out on my horse. I'm not clear how rail is going to top that.
5) The most "interesting" places people generally know about have /warps to them. Those that people don't know about are going to be in unexplored wildlands you won't have a train to get them to... because it is "unexplored wildlands".

I would *like* to see rail. I would very much like to *build* rail through nether to get to some more distant areas, and once I've mined and explored around my own area, I wouldn't mind having friendly neighbors somewhat close to my location connected by rail. So I'm in your camp, I'm on your side. But those are five things I can see that are going to throw the track on a rail line. Hopefully we can see some way around these problems sufficient to actually have rail service going. I very much wish you the best of luck on it, and I hope perhaps I would be able to assist at some point.

A few points here.

Just because there are warps to the places, doesn't mean people wont use the railway system, it is much more fun.

Griefing is easily rolled back and its a rare thing on this server, to prevent ever being griefed ask Luigi for more power and claim all the railway.

Ok, a point that has to be made is stop making so many stops, nobody wants to stop every 10 seconds, so just make stops where the towns/cities/outposts/homes are.

Well, stops for testing make sense, though in production there should be fewer. Also, different *types* of stops should be tested to see what kinds are annoying and what kinds are fine.

"Griefing is easily rolled back", but only by staff and that increases their workload. We can't do our own rollbacks. The problem with having more faction power is that you have a "wall" of 16x16 chunks faction claimed from level 0 to 255. If you are mining underground, you hit this wall and you CAN NOT pass it without digging back up, hopefully not hitting lava or water, crossing over, then getting back down to the level you were. You can't mine around it... it's a wall. That would be pretty severe. If it is *possible*, protecting a set box in x1, y1, z1 to x2, y2, z2 that ONLY includes the critical rail elements would make mining around much less painful. Keep in mind, without using illegal X-Ray, you can't TELL there is a rail up there, you just know some damned b@$t4rd claimed a "wall" of land you can't get around... WHAT A JERK! So hopefully there is a better way that doesn't increase the staff workload while protecting the time and effort invested in a rail.

I've been griefed on this server. It isn't often, but the point of griefing is the shock and anger produced that exceeds the effort invested in the activity. Want to really make the rail hell? Knock out curves so the minecart flies off from way high. Knock out the track every 25 to 50 blocks, just do it randomly. Replace redstone blocks with red wool. Add a switch and make the rail turn go totally FUBAR, especially if you can put it in spots that HIDE what you did.

Make something really nice and cool that people can enjoy, and it will be compulsory that someone must muck it up so as to foul the fun so many people are enjoying. This is a MUST HAPPEN. That's just people. That is how people work. Anything not explicitly forbidden is compulsory.

A big "thank you" to everyone that has replied to this post. I'm thrilled that this is getting attention at all.

Being a donator, I'm thinking I might need to do a few things to beef up the track:

* Track base and "pylons" (aka bridge supports) out of bedrock
* Use invisible blocks ...erm, wait. People can probably smack those out too.

Romaq, thank you very much for your points. I'll sit down at some point and really think about how to properly implement a railroad system. Maybe I'll ask Luigi to give me special railroad-claiming power (no...clue...what...that...is...yet...). All the same, it's been an interesting experience for me.

If the server reset happens anytime soon, it'll be an even better opportunity to put some of this stuff to practice.

Stay tuned...

I only saw this today, but I hope this can help. 1 block in the Nether = 8 blocks in the Overworld, so having a track in the Nether could go 8x as fast. Just sayin'...
