What is spam? To me, it seems that half of this server has no clue on what spam is, and most of the time calls someone for spam when its really not spam. For example, just now Viale called me for spam when i said "XDDDDDDDDDD" in chat. I said "dats not spam" and he tells me its character spam. I asked "and that is a problem why?" To me, spam is when the chat is completely filled up with a message that was sent from one person. If I say something in caps that uses up one line of space in the chat, is that spam? to me, no. the alternative version without caps would take up the same amount of space in chat, so how is that spam? if its not causing a problem, why should we be called out for it?

I agree that I was a bit strict with that, and I'll take your complaint into consideration on fixing my warnings. Thanks for mentioning it.

If the statement was not repeated nor took up multiple lines in chat, I'd never consider it spam.

Viale, if this was a complaint about you, I’d name the title “Viale” and post it in the complaints section. I’m just voicing my opinion

Bump id like to see some feedback from staff that isn’t trying to argue with people in the comments and rather the post itself

Here is my opinion on what is spam-
- not “character spam”. So if i say hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, i know some staff will call that spam, much like your situation, when it isnt (or shouldnt be)
- when i was staff, i would start telling the player to stop if it is 3 consecutive messages, and if they didnt stop, a 3 minute mute.
If they are spamming an IP, my punishment would be contexual on who the spammer is. If a player just joined as a default and starts spamming an IP i would instantly ban them as its clear they have no good intentions to the server. If it was a well known player, i would just mute them knowing that chances are its not them

I was watching a video from CollegeHumor that challenged the viewer to see through the whole thing. At one part, the guy pauses for 10 seconds, though it feels like much longer to most. I feel this may help server staff realize that sometimes a couple second mute is enough to make a player stop. I also noticed that the longer a player is muted, the louder they get when unmuted. I feel muting should happen in several phases, starting with 15 seconds, then 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, then a tempban.

This is something that I've noticed and I've taken it into my own hands to deal with it.

About the same time Loki got Owner (Not saying it's his fault or not, that's just about the time it started) the rules for caps and spam suddenly became very strict.

When I first became a mod you would give a warning to somebody for spam if they said the same message 3 or 4 times in a row within 30 seconds, if they continued they would be warned again and then muted if they still continued.

You'd warn somebody for caps if they said 1 - 3+ messages (depending on the length of the message) in full caps, a message that was nearly 2 full lines long would instantly get a warning, if it was just like a few words they would get warned if they did it 3 times in a short amount of time. After at least 2 warnings they could be muted.

You'd warn somebody for swearing if it was very excessive, like 5 times in one message. Or just a lot spread out through other messages. Punishment and warnings would also depend on if it was directed at anybody aggressively or to hurt them, which would break rule 3.

It seems like now players would get warned for just one single averagely sized message in all caps, or for just 1 or 2 swears, OR just a short message in all caps such as the one alpaca has given us in this post. "XDDDDDDDDDD". If it was a longer message it could've warranted a warning, but if this was the only instance of it at the time a warning shouldn't have been issued.

I feel like one of the main issues that's started this is that the system has become a lot more robotic. The new staff members don't take the situation into account and if they see a swear word or two they'll treat it like any other incident. I covered this in another post but the reason it's important is because swearing can be used in many different ways, it's not just a cut and clean warning and then mute each time.
As an example there's a very big difference between "Ah f***ing s*** man, that's some f***ing bulls***." and "F*** YOU, YOU F***ING SUCK YOU B****!!". While both of them violate the excessive swearing rule, one is obviously more severe than the other. One was used passively, one was used to directly try and hurt somebody. This stuff used to be taken into account to decide if the player should be warned or muted, or for how long. Not every incident is exactly the same.

When it comes to this stuff is seems like Randito and Viale are usually the ones accused, I see that Viale has already apologized for this particular incident, and Randito has already been asked to be more lenient while handling chat offenses, But I'm going to go over with them how chat offenses SHOULD be handled in private message. It goes without saying the old system was better than how it is now judging by all the complaints we've gotten.

I'll be working it out with the other staff members, Thanks for the post.

I agree with everything shad stated here. This issue and others like it are being written into the new staff guidebook, and should help on issues that depend on the situation.
